Burger Business in the 50’s

By Susan Fielder

I was raised in the Burger Business in Kansas City. We owned Allens and Smaks which was a really popular place to dine. Look at those cars!

Allens was barbecue with the tele-tray and Smaks was like McDonalds. As a matter of fact, McDonalds wanted to buy us as we were the biggest in the midwest. Dad said no.

We did 32 Million Hamburgers in 15 years. The Johnson County Library just put in a museum to acknowledge the business. Quite a story.

Lots of great memories. People are still talking about these great places! There were 5 Allens and 28 Smaks.
